Program Officer, Gender Violence and Rights
Posted: Thu, 09/08/2007 - 4:40pm
PATH is an international, nonprofit organization that creates sustainable, culturally relevant solutions, enabling communities worldwide to break longstanding cycles of poor health. PATH's mission is to improve the health of people around the world by advancing technologies, strengthening systems, and encouraging healthy behaviors. Violence against women reaches beyond the immediate threat of bruises and broken bones. The violence women around the world routinely endure is linked to severe health problems--chronic pain, disability, disease, and mental problems--that affect not only the health of individuals, but the social health of communities and the economic health of nations. PATH's Gender, Violence and Rights program was initiated in 2001 and aims to promote gender equity in health and the prevention of GBV using a systems approach to link communities, institutions, and policies. The program works with international partners, such as the World Health Organization and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, as well as local and regional organizations and networks, to carry out evidence-based advocacy and to strengthen health systems and communities to address GBV from a human rights and public health perspective. Over the next few years, the program will build on its international work to strengthen knowledge on GBV and collaboration among regional and local groups engaged in preventing and elimination such violence, especially in Latin America and Africa.
