Job Description
RTI International is seeking a Senior Water and Sanitation Specialist to work in the International Development Group’s growing water practice. This senior staff position will be require a technical specialist on water and sanitation development, with substantial field-level experience implementing water supply and sanitation projects in urban, peri-urban, and rural settings in developing countries. Practical knowledge of urban and rural sanitation programming is a key point of emphasis in this new role.
Responsibilities and Duties
This position is part of the Water and Environment for Development program within RTI’s International Development Group and may be based either at RTI International’s headquarters in Research Triangle Park, NC or in the company’s Washington, DC office. The Senior Specialist will report to the Director of the Water and Environment for Development program.
Responsibilities:
• Advocate for relevant policy reform and provide expert advice on strategies for improving water and sanitation services to the poor;
• Support program development through building a network of partners and clients and grow our portfolio of water supply and sanitation projects, with an emphasis on sanitation;
• Consult with key WS&S sector institutions, and the leading international donors with an emphasis on USAID, as well as the ADB, DFID, Gates Foundation, WSP, and the World Bank.
• Lead successful technical proposals for new projects funded by the above leading international donors and foundations;
• Provide knowledge leadership in sanitation through participating in and leading conference events, developing new tools, and publishing technical papers and on current water and sanitation sector issues;
• Manage short-term and long-term field projects through the provision of management oversight and technical advisory services;
• Develop scopes of work, project designs, and contract and grant agreements for improving water and sanitation services in poor communities;
• Develop performance indicators and monitoring strategies for water, sanitation and hygiene programs;
Necessary Skills and Qualifications
Requirements:
• Twelve or more years of relevant technical experience in developing countries, including work in urban, peri-urban and rural areas;
• Masters degree in a field relevant to water and sanitation, economics, finance, engineering, social sciences or public health;
• Strong communication and writing skills in English;
• Strong second language skills are also preferred, with French language skills as an advantage;
• Established scientific or technical stature, as indicated by a record of relevant publications and/or technical reports, with an emphasis on sanitation sector;
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with clients, counterparts, and peers in WSS sector institutions in developing countries;
• Experience with USAID projects and sector work, especially in emerging areas of urban and peri-urban sanitation;
• Highly organized, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a complex work program; and
• Ability to garner trust and facilitate program development in a multicultural environment.
