Position Description
This position is responsible for managing and maintaining Heifer’s direct marketing program.
Responsibilities and Duties
Responsibilities:
-
Develop
direct marketing programs for raising funds and promoting Heifer
following the strategic plan and budget constraints, including: 1)
monthly direct mail appeals; 2) holiday gift catalogs; 3) special
giving program; 4) monthly giving program; 5) acknowledgement/receipt
of donors; 6) on-line DM appeal versions and on-line monthly giving
program, 7) telemarketing, and 8) working with New Media to consult on
web appeals.

Supervise direct reports on Direct Marketing team.

Lead in the development of direct marketing plans and budgets.

Implement new strategies for increasing income via direct mail.

Develop and oversee relationships with outsourced vendors including management of vendor contracts.

Oversee
the coordination of materials necessary to develop all prospect
mailings, individual monthly appeal mailings and special projects.

Establish regular meetings between Direct Marketing and other departments impacted by direct marketing including: donor services, development and international programs.

Track and analyze the results of each individual direct marketing program by: response rate, gross income, average gift and expense.

Interpret
patterns and trends within direct marketing data in order to more
accurately project future Direct Marketing strategies and results.

Develop and coordinate materials such as donor acknowledgement letters and inserts for Heifer’s thank you/receipting program.

Coordinate the gathering of materials such as stories from the field and photos needed for direct marketing programs.

Communicate details of direct marketing programs to other personnel including direct mail results and income projections.

Provide information regarding specific appeals to Internet staff for the purpose of launching joint online appeals.

Work with other communication staff for the purpose of integrating marketing activities where and when appropriate.

Provide
Heifer’s international fundraising partners with guidance and
information regarding the establishment of direct mail fundraising
programs around the world.

Responsible for meeting yearly income goals set by Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications.

May perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Necessary Skills and Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s
degree in marketing, communications, journalism or related field plus
ten (10) years of progressively more responsible experience in
marketing management and direct mail fundraising required.
OR
Twelve (12) years’ related experience.
Preferred Education and/or Experience:
Master’s degree preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge
of direct mail fundraising strategies, donor development practices,
understanding what constitutes a persuasive case to the public and the
ability to present and make the case clearly.

Ability
to develop marketing plans and comprehensive strategies leading to
growth both in income and the size of Heifer’s donor file.

Ability to read and interpret marketing data and utilize in the creation of future strategies.

Ability to research, analyze and monitor financial, technological and demographic factors to capitalize on market opportunities.

Knowledge of income and expense budget preparation, tracking processes and software.
-
Strong general management, strategic planning, organization, and administrative skills.
-
Proven interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to relate to individuals and groups effectively and tactfully.

Experience
with NGO/PVO approach, and knowledge of global sustainable development,
international experience and knowledge of hunger organizations
desirable.

Skilled with computers as a tool for word processing, database, e-mail, spreadsheets and organizing.

Ability to prepare and present verbal and written presentations, reports and business correspondence.

Ability to foster and maintain a spirit of unity, teamwork and cooperation among all personnel.
-
Sensitivity to working with multiple cultures and beliefs.
-
Willingness to travel both statewide and internationally as needed.
