Position Description
PATH is an international, nonprofit organization that creates sustainable, culturally relevant solutions, enabling communities worldwide to break longstanding cycles of poor health. PATH's mission is to improve the health of people around the world by advancing technologies, strengthening systems, and encouraging healthy behaviors.
The PATH Rotavirus Vaccine Program (RVP), a partnership with the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control, is working to dramatically reduce the typical 10 to 15 year timeline between introduction of new vaccines in wealthy countries and their availability in the developing world. RVP is one of several PATH initiatives to reduce childhood disease and mortality from diarrheal disease. PATH is also promoting an integrated policy framework, Enhanced Diarrheal Disease Control; working with partners to develop new vaccines against rotavirus and the leading bacterial causes of diarrheal disease; expanding use of best breastfeeding and nutritional practices; and helping increase access to clean water.
Responsibilities and Duties
As a member of the RVP team, the Communications Officer will work closely with colleagues within the team and more broadly across PATH. This effort will connect and enhance work underway in several PATH programs including RVP, Maternal & Child Health and Nutrition, and Vaccine Development, and will foster extensive collaboration across programs. The primary responsibilities are communications for educating policy-makers and to advance an issue campaign, including:
* Coordinate development and lead implementation of a global advocacy campaign to raise priority of preventing and treating diarrheal disease.
o Use the results of an external scan to determine targets of opportunity.
o Identify and engage influential champions.
o Integrate strategy with other PATH efforts.
o Establish evaluation method and milestones.
* Develop materials and messages to make the investment case for diarrheal disease prevention and control to governments and international agencies that support development in low-resource countries.
* Develop portfolio for countries to make evidence-based decisions:
o Create materials and tools on diarrheal disease and effective interventions to help countries prioritize diarrheal control strategies.
o Develop educational materials to support technical assistance to countries weighing rotavirus vaccine introduction.
o Coordinate messages, materials, and outreach regarding vaccine safety issues as use of rotavirus vaccines expands.
o Anticipate risks and challenges; develop communications plans to manage and mitigate risks
* Document the results of country-level strategies; capture success stories and case studies to inform discussions about scale-up efforts.
* Rewrite scientific and technical content for general audiences; prepare web content, press releases, and other written materials to support program objectives.
* Manage assigned communications projects from concept to completion.
