Description:
John Snow, Inc. (JSI), a Boston-based public health firm committed to improving the health of underserved populations worldwide, is currently seeking a summer intern to work with its project in Djibouti. The Expanded Coverage of Essential Health Services in Djibouti Project (Projet PECSE) is providing the population (particularly in rural districts) with a package of quality health services to improve access, reduce morbidity and mortality rates among women and children, and promote full community participation in health services delivery. The PECSE Project, in collaboration with other local technical and financial partners, is supporting the Government of Djibouti's efforts to improve the availability of basic care in the rural districts and at certain sites in the capital and will support the National Health Training Center's efforts to improve the training of health professionals in the country.

Objective of the internship
The Intern will assist PECSE Project team in analyzing and using program-related data to highlight results achieved. The intern will assist in organizing the End of Project Conference, scheduled for late April or early May. Current project objectives include:

1. Increasing DPT3 vaccination coverage
2. Increasing percentage of health facilities linked to community health committees with both male and female representation
3. Increasing percentage of health posts rehabilitated with a water system
4. Increasing number of training modules implemented
5. Increasing number of child diarrhea cases treated in USG-assisted programs
6. Increasing number of antenatal visits by a skilled providers from USG-assisted facilities
7. Counting the number of people trained in child health and nutrition through USG-assisted health programs
RESPONSIBILITIES
During the eight week internship, the Djibouti Intern will perform the following tasks:

Monitoring and Evaluation
- Work closely with the Evaluation Specialist to assist in data analysis;
- Assist Evaluation Specialist in analyzing Champion Community data;
- Analyze available data from the Ministry of Health and other survey results on key indicators, and prepare short narratives to explain trends including graphs, working with Ministry personnel if possible;

Documentation and Communication
- Use all available data on Project-supported in-service training efforts to document both quantitative and qualitative work. This could include mapping of providers trained by core subject area, increased case-load or other indicators of changes after provider training, analysis of post-tests and workshop evaluation data.
- Prepare data tables, graphs/charts and narrative on key issues that should be documented before the end of the project (select with Chief of Party)
- Assist the team in preparing for the End of Project Conference, including but not limited to document and poster preparation, press briefing package, and logistics.

Field Visits
- Visit multiple field sites with project staff, looking at the M&E system and other issues first hand

The Intern will work under the supervision of Dr. Stanislas Nebié (Chief of Party) and Ms. Fatoum Salim Mohamed (Monitoring and Evaluation Officer).

Deliverables
1. Three-five page summaries on status of at least three indicators
2. Training Program Report: Documentation and Analysis
3. Internship Summary and Exit Interview
4. Documents and Posters as needed for the Conference
QUALIFICATIONS
1. MPH or Master's student in related field;
2. Solid grounding in epidemiological methods and data analysis
3. Knowledge and skills in interpreting data and preparing research and narrative reports in a professional and concise manner;
4. Strong computer skills;
5. Very strong interpersonal skills, including ability to work in a cross cultural team setting;
6. Good organizational abilities and ability to work independently;
7. Interest in international health;
8. Ability to live independently in another culture;
9. Familiarity and/or experience in Africa desirable.
10. Fluent English and Advanced Proficiency or Fluency in French
