Senior Policy and Advocacy Officer
Posted: Fri, 21/09/2007 - 12:20pm
For more than 25 years, Mercy Corps has worked to alleviate suffering, poverty, and oppression around the globe by partnering with people to create productive and just communities. Now we are seeking to improve these outcomes by dramatically altering the way young Americans think about the world and their role within it. As the physical anchor of this strategy, the Mercy Corps' World Hunger Action Center will open in lower Manhattan in the spring of 2008. Designed by Edwin Schlossberg and ESI Design, the Center will be a learning space devoted to informing, inspiring and engaging visitors of all ages. Visitors will leave with the knowledge, the tools and the commitment to help build a world with more hope, understanding and action for positive change.
Additionally, Mercy Corps recently merged with NetAid, a New-York based organization that educates, inspires, and empowers young people to fight global poverty. Mercy Corps will leverage NetAid’s existing programs and network of students and teachers to strengthen its mission: to create a movement of informed youth – tomorrow’s leaders and voters – who understand the root causes of global poverty, share our commitment to ending it, and view themselves as partners with the world’s poor in finding solutions.
The Senior Policy and Advocacy Officer is responsible for the overall management of campaign-based initiatives at the Hunger Center and the development of engagement opportunities – from direct action to public education – for a diverse audience, including youth and educators. The Senior Policy and Advocacy Officer will also develop an advocacy platform and comprehensive campaign strategies for the Hunger Center which reflect Mercy Corps’ existing advocacy positions, integrate peer organization offerings, and provide engaging ways for young people to make a difference. The Senior Policy and Advocacy Officer will manage the advocacy and community outreach efforts associated with the physical and web-based exhibits, help coordinate pre- and post-launch events, and build a constituency within the New York City area.
